WHERE OCEAN AND LAVA MEET
Cap Jaune is a yellow rock of 50 meters height, hidden in a small bay in the “wild south” of la Réunion. It was formed and coloured by volcanic lava and magma. The easy trek through dense vegetation and along the lava rocks is one of the many hidden gems on Reunion Island. While the trek itself offers amazing views, you will find yourself even more amazed when spotting this volcanic yellow/ochre rock looking out of the lush green vegetation and deep blue ocean. Only few tourists know about this spot, which makes it even more enjoyable.
The trek is an easy 30 minutes walk starting in la Marine de Vincendo (part of St-Joseph) and is a winding path along the black lava rocks which fall steep into the ocean.
The lush green flora is a perfect contrast to the black rocks. Many of the species growing here find optimal conditions on the old lava and magma fields.
The trek offers many scenic views over the ocean and parts of the island.
In this protected area you can not only find endemic flora but also many rare animals. We had the chance to spot this mother “paille en queue”, sitting in the entrance of her cliff nest to protect her newborn child. This species of birds is a symbol for Reunion Island with its characteristic long white tail.
The path is flat and easy and leads to a viewpoint on Cap Jaune, only those who want to get to the bottom of the rock have to descend a little hill. This part is super short but might be a bit difficult as it is quite steep.
The yellow wall above, the blue turquoise ocean beneath and dense lush-green vegetation around – the perfect place to rest and enjoy the view.
A fascinating mix of colours which almost feels surreal.
