REUNION ISLAND – LA RÉUNION

Our highlights on this tropical paradise range from hiking the volcano to relaxed beach days and from chasing sunsets to diving with whales and dolphins.

Formed by volcanic action, this island offers diverse landscapes and a lot of adventure in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The island had several names before including Île Bourbon and is the origin of the Bourbon Vanilla. It was formed about 3 million years ago when the volcano Piton des Neiges (nowadays 3,070 meters above sea-level) was rising out of the ocean. Meanwhile the volcano Piton des Neiges fell asleep, while the second volcano Piton de la Fournaise in the south-east of the island is one of the most active ones in the world. With a multicultural population influenced mainly by Madagascar, East-Africa (“les cafres”), France (“les zoreils”), West India (“les zarabes”), South-East India (“les malbars”) and China you are not only finding diversity in landscapes but in culture and religion.
The island has tropical climate and is often confronted with cyclones bringing heavy rain, wind and swell to the shore.
