Ceviche, lime juice and música
Certainly the most famous dish in all Latin America: Ceviche. Everyone knows that the best ceviche are found in Perú. If not then you should definitely make your way to Barranco and hope for a free table at Canta Ranita!
Seafood is a family affair! Canta Ranita was founded by Vicente along with his brother Martin and it’s located in the back of el Mercado Capullo in the bohemian district of Barranco. They are no more than the sons of the owner of Canta Rana, a reference for seafood in Lima since more than 30 years. Growing up in between fish markets and their parent’s kitchen, it is quite natural that the two brothers ended up opening their own restaurant. They wanted to make good food with fresh ingredients at a low price.
The restaurant has a chill and sporty vibe. Colorful pictures and jerseys of football players are covering the green walls of this tiny space. We loved the hidden location, the colors, the reggae music and the flaming open kitchen. It has a lot more young and chill atmosphere than the Canta Rana. People are queuing to try their dishes so keep in mind that you’ll probably have to wait for a bit. When you arrive take a ticket and wait until one of the waiters is giving you a free table.
They are not only famous for their ceviche but everything seafood related.
We shared a “causa langostino” and the ceviche “guardia imperial”. Portions are big and it is more than enough to fill up two persons. Plus we were snacking a lot of “cancha serrana” (typical Peruvian snack made of roasted corn nuts) while waiting for our food.
We devoured the causa in no more than 3 minutes. For those of you who have no idea what we are talking about “causa” is a typical Peruvian dish made of layers of yellow smashed potatoes, filled with avocado, lettuce, tuna or chicken… Lots of variants are existing. The shrimp causa at Canta Ranita had this perfect soft texture, a lot of flavors and was not dry at all!
The ceviche was just delicious – the balance between raw fish, lemon juice, sweet potatoes, red onions and corn was perfect. The fried octopus on top, the coriander/lime sauce and the avocado definitely made this dish the most tasty ceviche we ever had. Also because we’ve always dreamed of ceviche combined with avocado…
If you have the chance to go there we highly recommend to try the “causa langostino”, the “conchitas” (scallops), the “ceviche apaltado” and the famous “guardia imperial”. The fresh juice was also really good!
There is always going to be a discussion about where to find the best ceviche in Lima and it is impossible to try them all. But after trying many different ones we can say that Canta Ranita is our favorite place for a tasty and fresh ceviche. On top of that the atmosphere in the back of this open market is pretty awesome.
